Tutors with
Tails
is a
new library reading program for children ages
6 – 10. The first, second and third grade years are
critical in the development of good readers. Many
children struggle to achieve the reading fluency that
makes reading both a pleasure and an effective tool for
lifelong learning.
To support them as they master the art
of reading, children come to the library once a month to
read to trained therapy dogs and enjoy the reading
experience in a relaxed and friendly environment.
As they read to their canine partners, the children gain
reading confidence and improve their reading
skills. They also develop positive associations for the
library and for animals. Most importantly, the program
is great fun for both readers and dogs.
The dogs participating in
the program are all registered members of Therapy Dogs
International and are accompanied by their trainers.
